![]() The team along with Search K9 Destiny followed topographical maps to find an off-trail route to access the subject and the subject was recovered and helped back to the parking area successfully. The search team was able to quickly gain visual and audible contact with the subject who was on a cliff line off trail. PCSAR responded with the aid of Hunter Hounds Search and Recovery and began to try and locate the subject who stated they had tried to access the top of Grays Arch. In the course of the rescue teams had to setup multiple low angle rope systems to ensure the safety of both the subject and the teams.įinally, on Monday 10/24 PCSAR was called for a lost hiker in the area of Grays Arch in the Red River Gorge. The teams together were able to get a litter basket to the subject, package the subject, and safely get the subject down to be examined. Because of the difficulty of the terrain, WCSAR was again called for mutual aid. The hiker was reported to be at the top of the trail by the stone stairs with a broken ankle. Next, on Sunday 10/23 PCSAR was again called to Natural Bridge to aid PCEMS with an injured hiker on Rock Garden Trail. The team was successful in getting the subject down to be examined by EMS. ![]() To aid help with moving the subject mutual aid was provided by Wolfe County Search & Rescue Team. This requires taking the litter basket apart to fit it through Fat Mans Squeeze the reassembling on the other side to continue with the subject. After consulting with PCEMS it was decided to take the chair lift to access the subject faster then to use a wheeled litter basket to get the subject back to the chair lift. A female hiker was reported to be unconscious at the top of the original trail at the park. Powell County Search and Rescue has been busy! Over the last several days we have responded to several calls partnering with multiple teams in the area!įirst, Saturday 10/22 PCSAR was called to assist Powell County Emergency Medical Services with a call at Natural Bridge State Resort Park. Always let someone know where you’re going and your expected return time. Carry plenty of water, snacks, and a flashlight. AllTrails is good to use for finding trails in your area, however, GAIA is best used for navigation, along with a paper map. The hikers said they were using AllTrails, but navigation was not locating them. After rehydrating with water, the team and hikers walked back out, for a total hiking time of 2.5 hours and 4.42 miles. The hasty team consisting of 2 team members, along with a park ranger, decided hiking up the end of the Hoods Branch Trail would be the fastest route to the hikers. They finally made the correct decision to call 911 for help. They also never encountered any hikers to ask for help, as this Loop is not heavily traveled. They kept trying to retrace their steps to the main trail, but each time ended back up at the rock shelter. Not being familiar with this trail, they kept walking and reached the large rock shelter, then attempted to retrace their steps to the main trail. The leaf litter here, especially from the Big Leaf Magnolias, make the trail almost impossible to follow. This section of the trail is marked with white diamond trail markers. They followed the blue diamond trail markers for Hoods Branch Trail, but by misreading the intersection sign, they made the left turn onto the Upper Hoods Branch Loop. They had ridden the skylift up and then chose to walk down Hoods Branch Trail. Since the hikers were not injured, but extremely tired and without water, it was decided to send a hasty team in to get them. PCSAR received a call from lost hikers at Natural Bridge State Resort Park.
